Polar Cubs is a unique winter program for Cub Scouts and their families, held at Gardner Dam Adventure Base in February 2023. Campers will be grouped into “Super Dens” keeping those from the same Pack together. Led by staff members, these dens will rotate through various outdoor winter adventure focused activities. Overnight registrations include a bunk in one of our heated cabins (with indoor showers and restrooms), meals, and a participant patch. We offer two weekend options so you can conveniently fit this event into your family or Pack schedule.

Arctic Adventure is a winter adventure program for Scouts BSA and Venturers with a variety of outdoor and indoor activities. Enjoy the pristine Northwoods winter environment at Gardner Dam Adventure Base or Camp Hiawatha with the freedom to do nearly any winter activity you want like snowshoeing, cross country skiing, broomball, outdoor hiking, sledding, and much more! Overnight registration includes a bunk in one of our heated cabins, meals, and a participant patch. Also, back again is the new and exciting Ice Climbing Adventure, based at Camp Hiawatha in Munising, MI. You will have three weekend sessions to choose from in February and March 2023.

Calling all Cub Scout leaders! Pi day is an awesome STEM event that takes place each March. It is open to all Scouters from Lions to leaders. To make this event happen, we need you -- enthusiastic and wonderful volunteers who are willing to step up and keep this event accessible. If you are interested in helping out the youth in our council, please reach out to Amanda Tuttle. Event registration will be announced soon.

Join us at Maple Syrup Open House, where we will build, explore, taste, touch, race, hike, feel the sun, and have all kinds of fun for the whole family! Activities and programs are designed for youth 11 and under. Registration includes a pancake brunch with Bear Paw's own Maple Syrup! Follow us on Facebook. Registration will open soon.

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience that they can use in their home troops and crews, as well as other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

Join us in congratulating a recent Bay-Lakes Council Eagle Scout:

Timothy Isabel, from Troop 209 out of Ontonagon, MI, Hiawathaland District

Troop 209 is Chartered by Siloa Lutheran Church in Ontonagon, MI.

Timothy's Eagle project in his words, "My project was redoing the landscaping under the Ewen Trout Creek School sign. It used to have an old wood box around it full of rocks. I replaced it with a panther paw print made of yellow and black (school colors) mulch. It was about $1,200 and I sold popcorn and got can donations to pay for it. I asked troop 207 of Houghton-Hancock, my family, and the public to help with my project. My project really made the school look even more amazing."

Timothy passed his Board of Review on October 9, 2022. His unit leader is Anthony Isabel.

Spoiler alert: the sermon for New Year's Day will open with me ripping the December page off the 2023 calendar and musing aloud if some actually say "good riddance" to 2022. What will you say about the year almost fading? What do you most look forward to in the "new year?"

It seems as we get older, we expect less when the calendar changes, perhaps even as we move through individual weeks. Some will tell you that it is just "another day" and nothing will be different on Jan. 1 than it was on Dec. 31. To be honest, it strikes me as saddening.

For the past couple years, this GUIDE has been sharing the good news of Scouting in Bay-Lakes Council: some of the activities are tried and true, worthy of repeating; other events are daring and new and even exciting. As we scroll through the story links, we see volunteers and professionals working hard to keep Scouting alive and well in Bay-Lakes. Consider Polar Cubs or Arctic Adventures at Gardner Dam Adventure Base. (I was at camp before the eight inches of snow fell, and the scenes were already inviting...where are my snowshoes?)  Something indoors for the older Scouts and Venturers, it's the annual Winter Amidships in Fond du Lac. And, for all ages, an always fun PI Day. March continues with Maple Syrup Open House and two more Maple Syrup weekends at Bear Paw Scout Camp, where the cold and snow invites you to bring your sleds and play on the always thick ice of Bear Paw Lake. Even better, convince your unit to rent a building for make-your-own-fun weekend at camp.

On Jan. 1, I might be ripping away an old calendar page. But it merely means that more adventure awaits. Hanukkah Blessings! Merry Christmas! Kwanzaa good wishes! Happy New Year!

See you on the trail...at camp!
