Pancakes - Syrup - Fun!

All of that wrapped up in a Scouting event! There are two opportunities to come to Bear Paw Scout Camp this spring and learn more about how we make maple syrup at Bear Paw…and of course try some of that amazingly tasty stuff that makes Scouting Sweeter One Bottle at a Time.

Saturday, March 23, 2024 - Maple Syrup Days Open House - 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This family friendly event is perfect for families, Dens or Packs. The programming is geared towards Cub Scout aged kids (6-10). Registration is $15 per person (5 and under are free) and includes all activities, event patch and a pancake brunch.

Saturday, April 6 or Saturday, April 13 – Maple Syrup Days – 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Geared for Scout aged youth (11+), this program focuses on learning about maple syrup making from tapping trees to bottling syrup.  Registration is $30 per person and includes all programming, a pancake breakfast, lunch, an event patch, and an 8 oz bottle of syrup.  If your Scout has previously attended check out our Advanced Program track where they can dive deeper into their favorite parts of maple syrup.

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience that they can use in their home troops and crews, as well as other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

Pack & Paddle adds value to the NYLT leadership training syllabus by executing the course of instruction in the context of a wilderness backpack and canoe trek, where participants put leadership theory to immediate, real world practice. For many, Pack & Paddle is a mountaintop experience from which they will benefit the rest of their lives.

Most of us file income tax forms every year, and we have developed a routine. In late autumn, an email reminds me to order next year's program. A few months later, the first version is downloaded. For well over a decade, I have used a particular laptop; it has to be portable because a few other family members use the program. Fortunately, I learned years ago from IT staff that I should always back up files...just in case.

Well, the "just in case" happened: that particular laptop no longer "fires up." The tech person attributes it to a failed motherboard. (Yes, I have the misfortune to know what that means, but not how to get around those problems.) Because of the laptop's age, he recommended against installing a new one because who knows what will next fail. (Sounds like my car repair  tech!) Store policy prevents them from trying to recover any files unless I purchase a new device from them. I assured him that the data was safely backed up to an external hard drive. And, as I write this note, two more back-ups are in process...another 30 minutes or so, to finish. And, then, we can start doing our taxes.

A few years back, "Aaron on Scouting" offered this story--In Scouting, Failing to Have a Plan B is Planning to Fail. Author Bryan Wendell wrote, "As Scouts and Scouters, we’re prepared for the unexpected emergency during an event or activity. But what about the possibility that the event might not happen at all? That’s why having a plan B (and even a C or D) is important. When you fail to have a plan B — well, you know the rest." We surely do; not every plan A works out as it should.

We often hear that Scouting is a safe place for youth, and this is one reason. It even starts when the first plans are developed. As adults, we can help facilitate with a simple "What if" question just to encourage the youth to think more broadly. Extreme weather might cancel a planned weekend excursion; yet, a day trip to the bowling lanes, a museum or the roller rink might work for the unit's activity.

Backing up: it is what we do. Let's make sure we plan for it.

And, now, onto the tax preparation mode...wish me luck!
